Use this after your PR/FAQ holds up. Keep it to one to three pages and treat it as a living document, not a contract.
- 01
Overview
What is this and why are we doing it? Lift the customer and problem straight from your PR/FAQ.
Example
Ledger automates month-end close for finance teams under 50, who lose the first week of every month to manual reconciliation.
- 02
Goals & success metrics
Name the outcomes and the measurable signals that prove you hit them. Prefer input metrics you control.
Example
Cut average close time from 6 days to 1; 80% of reconciliations auto-matched without manual touch.
- 03
Primary persona
Who is the key user, their role, and their top pain points?
Example
Controller at a 200-person company; owns close; judged on speed and accuracy; drowning in spreadsheets.
- 04
Functional requirements
List what the product must do, each with a priority (high / medium / low). Write them as outcomes.
Example
FR-1 (high): Auto-reconcile transactions across connected systems and surface only exceptions.
- 05
Scope & non-goals
State explicitly what you are not building in this release. This is where scope creep dies.
Example
Non-goal for v1: multi-entity consolidation and custom reporting.
- 06
Assumptions & risks
What has to be true, and what could break it?
Example
Assumes integration coverage for the top five accounting systems; risk is breadth of edge-case connectors.
