Working Backwards

Working Backwards is Amazon's product-development method. Instead of starting from what you can build, you start from the finished customer experience - writing the launch press release and FAQ before any code - and build only once that document proves the idea is worth it.

The method inverts conventional planning. A normal roadmap starts with a capability and pushes it toward a market; Working Backwards starts with a specific customer's problem and reasons backward to the smallest thing that solves it.

It became Amazon's default for major launches in the early 2000s and shaped the Kindle, Prime, and AWS. The core artifact is the PR/FAQ, and the core test is the so-what test.
