So-What Test

The so-what test is the decision moment in Working Backwards. After drafting the press release, you read it and ask: so what? Is this meaningfully better, faster, easier, or cheaper than what the customer does today? If the honest answer is no, you change the inputs and rewrite.

It's the method's built-in BS detector. The fix for a failing so-what test is never better copywriting - it's a better idea. You change the customer, the problem, or the solution and write the press release again.

Running this test on paper is dramatically cheaper than discovering the same answer after launch.
