Single-Threaded Leader

A single-threaded leader (STL) is one person who owns a single initiative full-time, with no competing priorities. Amazon uses the model because the biggest blocker to progress is divided ownership - an STL has the authority and the undistracted focus to move one thing forward.

The term borrows from computing: a single thread does one job at a time. Pairing an STL with a small, dedicated (two-pizza) team is how Amazon structures its most important bets.

It directly addresses the failure mode where an initiative is 'everyone's job' and therefore no one's.
