Bar Raiser

A bar raiser is a specially trained Amazon employee, from outside the hiring team, who participates in interviews with the explicit job of protecting hiring quality. They have effective veto power over an offer, ensuring each hire raises the company's overall bar rather than just filling a seat.

The role exists to counteract a predictable bias: a team under deadline pressure will rationalize a borderline hire. An independent bar raiser is insulated from that pressure.

It's a mechanism - a process that reliably produces an outcome - much like the PR/FAQ is a mechanism for product decisions.
