Input vs. Output Metrics

Input metrics measure the things a team can directly control (selection added, price reductions, page speed); output metrics measure the downstream results (revenue, profit). Amazon focuses management attention on inputs because improving the right inputs is what reliably moves outputs you can't control directly.

The trap is managing to the output - staring at revenue - which tells you what happened but not what to do. Identifying the few controllable inputs that actually drive the output is the harder, more useful work.

A PR/FAQ's goals section is stronger when it names the input metrics the team will move, not just the output it hopes for.
